The history of jewelry is the history of the human race. It is the earliest form of art, even before cave paintings. Most of the earliest examples can only be found in a museum. The allure of antique jewelry is akin to our fascination with history itself. The jewelry that survives and even thrives today is not typically as old. Most antique jewelry today dates back only a few hundred years at best. As with many antiques, it is craftsmanship that survives.
In our explorations of our fascination with antique jewelry, we are celebrating the past several hundred years and the rich history the jewelry from these eras brings to us. The periods of antique jewelry extend from the Georgian era of the 18th century to modern jewelry. These periods define our history through the jewelry they represent.
● Georgian 1714-1837
● Victorian 1837-1901
● Edwardian/ Belle Époque 1890-1920
● Art Nouveau 1890-1915
● Art Deco 1920-1935
● Retro 1930-1960
● Modern 1950-Present Day
The styles of the early periods of Vintage jewelry were led by the aristocracy, from King George, (Georgian) to Queen Vitoria (Victorian) to King Edward (Edwardian). Each had its own unique style which was often influenced by new technologies and material availability as in the Victorian era, along with sentimental jewelry and mourning wear. The Edwardian era was influenced by earlier more opulent times, from the Rococo period and even to the opulence of King Louis XIV’s court in Versailles.

The Art Nouveau and Art Deco Periods each had their own unique influences. Art Nouveau was influenced by the artists of the time, and a rejection of the opulence of the aristocracy. While Art Deco, in a time bookended by wars, was a celebration of change and the Roaring 20s. Each of these eras was also a celebration of women and their changing roles in society. A popular way to differentiate the two today is to think of Art Nouveau as being designed by elves, while art deco is designed by dwarves.

The Retro and Modern Eras of the 20th Century no longer followed the Aristocracy, and the stars of the silver screen became our influencers. A large growth in the power of advertising allowed companies like De Beers, Harry Winston, and Tiffany & Co. to effectively promote their beautiful designs. Familiar slogans like “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend” and “A Diamond is Forever” emerged from this advertising revolution, and planted diamonds firmly on the hands of women all over the world.
